Stand up paddling is an inviting, user friendly activity. One that allows nearly everyone to get out on the water and experience the joys of being outdoors.
However when it comes to purchase your own board. It can become a bit overwhelming.
We fully understand this. And wanted to help in making the process a bit easier. So we have put together a few tips on how eliminate the stress of buying a stand up paddleboard.
Find a Retailer Close By:
The knowledge that the local shops have is hard to replicate. As they have been selling boards for years. And are paddlers themselves. They have paddled all of the boards in their shop and have first hand knowledge of each model on their shelves. And if we have a question they can not answer they can go directly to the manufacturer to obtain it.
Along the same lines. The shops will be able to walk us through the difference in boards. From the types of construction to the shapes. And how each will work for our specific needs.
Beyond the help with the board itself, the shops also offer a lot more. They help us with getting all of the equipment we need to fully enjoy our time on the water. From safety gear to accessories and everything in between.
Along with the equipment, shops have community events and other types of programs. We can broaden our knowledge through lessons or connect with other stand up paddleboard enthusiasts by attending the events.

Try the Board:
It is so easy to look at a board and think it will work perfectly. Maybe it is the price. Or the colors that catch our eye. But until we head out on the water with it. We do not know if it is the right board for us.
Many of our shops have demo programs. Allowing us to take the board out for a short test drive and compare it to other options. This test helps to confirm that the board we picked out will work for us. It also provides a hands on experience to see if we can carry the board and get it to and from the water.
Storage and Transportation:
We have found the board, consulted with the shop. Took it out for a paddle. And now we are ready to bring it home.
Then we look outside and realize, that this brand new board will not fit in the back seat of our convertible. Or even worse. We get it home and can’t get it into our apartment.
How do we prevent this dilemma from occurring?
Look at the type of vehicle we drive. And the place we live. If storage and/or transportation is an issue, we still have options.
Many of the shops have a board storage program. Where we can leave or prized purchase with them, safely. And when we want to head out on the water it is ready and waiting for us.
If this is not available in our area, there is another solution. An inflatable stand up paddleboard, like the NSP Oxygen Touring. The boards come in a medium sized backpack. One small enough that it can be checked on any airplane, stored in a closet, corner of an apartment or trunk of a car. But when the time comes to head out on the water it can be inflated to a level where it is rigid enough that many will think it is a hard board. Allowing us to enjoy any of the disciplines of stand up paddleboarding.
We hope these tips help you with your purchase. And look forward to seeing you out on the water!
